PEARLS |
Pearls are believe to have the powers of love, money, protection and luck.
Pearls are formed in oysters and mussels
around an irritant that finds its way into
a mollusk's shell; a piece of any hard core
material or an artificially introduced bead.
The way the foreign object enters
is not important to the shellfish.
Coating it with layers of nacre is its self-defense.
The shellfish mantle forms a sac around the object,
then secretes the same material that forms
the outer layer of the shell.
With a series of such secretions
deposited in layers, the pearl is formed.
Pearls are bleached in hydrogen peroxide to become white.
Colored pearls are color enchanted
by irradiation or dyes.
The value of the pearl is based on its
luster, shape, size and color.
