CARNELIAN
Birhtstone for: July
Color: Reddish Brown and Orange.
Hardness: 6.5 to 7 on Moh's scale
Cleaning: Ultrasonic only.
The name Carnelian comes from the Latin carnem (flesh) with the notion of
expressing flesh-colored. It is suggested that the name carnelian underwent a
name change from cornelian in relatively recent times, but carnelian still
remains as the primary name for which this material is known. Throughout
history, Carnelian has been known as Sadoine, Mecca Stone and Pigeon's Blood
Agate. Mohammed, Napoleon I, and Napoleon III all have been reputed to have worn
carnelian.
